The Power of Electrolytes

WHy they’re essential for your health

When most people think of hydration, they think of plain water. While water is certainly vital for life (about 60% of the human body is water), it’s only part of the equation of staying properly hydrated.

The realt unsung heroes of hydration are electrolytes. These tiny minerals are responsible for everything from muscle health to balancing our body’s fluids and everything in-between.

What are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals that include sodium, potassium, phosphate, and bicarbonate. When dissolved in water, these minerals can help regulate the fluids in the cells, support muscle contractions (preventing cramps), and maintain nerve function.

Why are electrolytes so important?

  1. Fluid Balance: Electrolytes helps maintain proper hydration levels. Without them, your body can efficiently retain water, leading to dehydration- even if your drinking a ton of plain water!

  2. Muscle Function: Sodium, potassium, and calcium are key players in muscle contractions. If your electrolyte levels are off, you are more prone to experience muscle cramps, weakness, or spams.

  3. Nerve Signaling: Electrolytes are also crucial for transmitting electrical signals between nerve cells, allowing for proper communication within the body. When your body can send or receive signals properly, you may experience brain fog and fatigue.

Signs of Electrolyte imbalance

Electrolyte imbalance can occur for a variety of reasons, and not to just after a workout. Stress, illness, medications and poor diet can contribute to depletion of certain electrolytes. It’s important to recognize the signs of an imbalance:

  • Fatigue or brain fog

  • Muscle cramps or spasms

  • Dizziness

  • Headaches

  • Mood changes/Irritability

Keeping your electrolytes balanced is essential for optimal health. Fortunately, it doesn’t require expensive supplements or a fancy plan to maintain your levels. Replenishing electrolytes can be as easy as drinking water with added salt, or pure coconut water. You can also purchase flavored electrolytes online or in a store, but try to avoid anything with added sugar or artificial dyes/preservatives.

Whether your a gym-goer or someone looking to boost their energy levels, paying attention to to your electrolyte levels can make a huge difference in how you feel day-to-day.
